Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, has sent shockwaves through the fight world with his transition to boxing.
Ngannou’s first foray into the boxing world came in an exhibition bout against Tyson Fury in December 2023. This highly anticipated clash provided a glimpse into Ngannou’s boxing skills.
While the fight lacked the competitive intensity of a professional bout, it was a learning experience for Ngannou. He displayed improved footwork and head movement, even managing to knock Fury down momentarily. This success further fueled his desire to test himself in the professional boxing ring.
“I can now see certain MMA fighters can box – and he’s [Ngannou] one of them. I see him as someone who is serious about boxing.” Joshua said.
“When I saw his fight with Fury I thought: ‘He knows what he’s doing, he can handle himself.’ Lots of people say he won that fight and I thought this is a great challenge for me because I need to figure out more about myself.” Joshua added.
Scheduled to face Joshua on March 8th, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ngannou’s transition has sparked a significant debate.
Before entering the ring, Ngannou established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the UFC.
Nicknamed “The Predator,” he rose to fame with his explosive knockouts and terrifying power. With a record of 17 wins (13 knockouts) and 3 losses, Ngannou captured the coveted heavyweight championship in March 2021, defeating Stipe Miocic.
The fight between Ngannou and Joshua has generated significant buzz, with both fighters expressing confidence in their abilities.
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn suggested a much-anticipated fight between Joshua and Tyson Fury could be back on the table, if Joshua defeats Ngannou.
“The dream for Joshua has always been to be undisputed,” Hearn told the BBC.
“If AJ beats Ngannou and Fury beats Usyk, the whole world will be calling for Fury vs. Joshua.
“It’s probably one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport. Certainly the biggest fight in boxing now.” Hearn added.
