Former Chelsea striker, Timo Werner, was in the spotlight after RB Leipzig announced its readiness to release the player in the January transfer window. Despite starting his career at Chelsea with high hopes, Werner endured a difficult time at Stamford Bridge, which ultimately led him to return to his previous club, RB Leipzig.
Werner ed Chelsea in 2020 for a transfer fee of £47 million after his impressive performances with Leipzig. However, despite starting well, the German striker struggled to find his best form in the Premier League. Having only scored 10 goals in 56 league appearances, Werner was returned to RB Leipzig for £ 25 million.
At Leipzig, despite performing well in his first season, Werner again faced stiff competition up front and struggled to break into the starting XI. With just two goals scored in 13 appearances this season, club director Rouven Schroder confirmed that Leipzig are willing to listen to offers for Werner in the January transfer window.
It cannot be denied that names such as Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko and Yussuf Poulsen are ahead of Werner and are Leipzig’s mainstay in executing opportunities in front of goal.
Schroder stated, “We want a player who has something a little different in his head. If he has an idea that he wants to do something else, then we’ll deal with it. Life isn’t always rosy.”
“If he has the idea that he wants to do something else, then we will deal with it. He is part of our team, and he has to face competition for places,” added Schroder.
A number of clubs appear interested in g Werner. Newcastle reportedly showed strong interest, despite initial hesitation due to the player’s high wages. However, recent reports suggest that Werner has agreed to a pay cut, opening up the opportunity for Newcastle to reconsider his interest.
Apart from the Premier League, Serie A is also an option for Werner. Juventus is said to be a club interested in bringing in this German striker. With a potential deal that could reach around £165,000 per week, Werner has the option to continue his career in the Italian competition.
